What’s Covered by the Rhodes Scholarship ?
With the Rhodes Scholarship, you get:
- A living stipend of around £15,144 a year;
- All College and University fees;
- One round-trip flight to Oxford at the start and back home when you finish;
- The University application fee;
- Scholarship lasts for up to two years if you keep up good academic standing and behave well. You might be able to extend it for a third year if you stick to a recognized path to a DPhil (PhD).
Who Can Apply for the Rhodes Scholarship ?
To be eligible for the Rhodes Scholarship, you need to meet these criteria:
- Citizenship and residency: You gotta meet the citizenship and residency criteria for the Rhodes constituency you are applying to. Check out eligible countries here.
- Education: You should have finished an honors bachelor’s degree by October. Also, you need decent grades to be admitted to Oxford, which is pretty tough to get into. In Canada, a GPA of at least 3.75/4.0 is expected.
- Age: The age limit varies by constituency from at least 18 to a max of 28 by October 1st following selection. Most have a limit of 24 or 25. Make sure to check the age requirements for your area before applying. Successful candidates will head to Oxford the October after they’ve been selected. Normally you can’t defer the scholarship.
- Required Language: English
How to Put In Your Application?
Follow these steps to apply for the Rhodes Scholarship:
Documents Needed:
Basically, you’ll need these materials, but specifics can vary by constituency:
- Resume or CV or list of main activities. (Don’t include a photo in your CV for this scholarship)
- Proof of your academic record like transcripts from your undergrad and any postgrad courses
- Personal statement or essay (this should include what you wanna study at Oxford and why)
- English proficiency proof if it’s not your first language. Check the details here.
- Proof of age like birth certificate or passport
- Your photograph
- Four references from people who can confidentially vouch for your character and smarts including academic and leadership experience (make sure they are not relatives).
Step by Step Application Process:
(1) You can apply online at http://www.rhodeshouse.ox.ac.uk/scholarships/apply through the scholarships tab.
(2) Make sure to submit your application online with all the documents before the deadline.

(4) If you’re shortlisted, you’ll be invited to engage socially and then have a final interview. You have to be there in person as they won’t accommodate other options. No one gets selected without an interview. The Rhodes Trust will cover your travel costs for a First-Class train ticket but no hotel fees. If you’re coming from abroad, they won’t cover your international travel.
(5) After everything, you’ll receive an email about the result of your application.

How Selection is Done:
- Selection for the Rhodes Scholarship is done without considering financial status.
- Choosing candidates is independent of marital status, race, gender, or any other irrelevant factor. You may share that info in the ‘Outreach’ part of the application, it’s optional but helps ensure the process is fair. Those selecting will only see summary statistics in an anonymous way so it can’t be traced back to anyone.
- You are applying for the Rhodes Scholarship for entry into the University of Oxford in October 2024; you can’t defer the scholarship.
- The Rhodes Scholarship is only confirmed if you get accepted to the University of Oxford.
- If a sufficiently qualified candidate isn’t found, no selection will be made.
- The Selection Committee’s decision is final.

What Happens After Selection:
- Keep in mind you’ll need to apply to the University of Oxford shortly after being selected. They’ll give you all the info when you’re selected.
- The full applications of candidates that get selected will be accessible to Rhodes House in Oxford. Their references can be reused if needed for your application to Oxford.
- If you have any medical conditions or special needs that might need support at Oxford, you are encouraged to tell them in confidence. This is totally voluntary and helps Rhodes House offer you the right support and ensure your transition is as smooth as possible.
