The Belgian Government Scholarship for the year 2024 is currently open for applications. This scholarship covers tuition fees, travel expenses, and provides a living allowance.

Overview of the Scholarship

The scholarship program is designed for candidates interested in pursuing either a Master’s degree or specialized training courses. The program is affiliated with higher education institutions under the Wallonia-Brussels Federation in Belgium. It is specifically aimed at citizens from developing countries who have professional experience and are seeking to enhance their skills in a field related to development. Importantly, there are no application fees at any stage of the application or selection process.

Eligibility Criteria

To be eligible for this government-funded scholarship, applicants must:

  • Be a citizen of, and reside and work in, one of the eligible countries.
  • Hold a diploma equivalent to a postgraduate degree, with 300 ECTS accredited hours, for advanced Master’s and continuing education courses.
  • Hold a university degree, with 180 ECTS accredited hours, for advanced Bachelor’s programs.
  • Have obtained the relevant academic degree within the last 20 years, with allowances for extensions due to birth or adoption.
  • Possess at least two years of relevant professional experience in a country that is a partner to ARES.
  • Complete the application in the language of instruction for the chosen program and demonstrate proficiency in that language. A basic knowledge of French is also required for effective integration into Belgian society.
  • Apply for only one training course.

Scholarship Benefits

  • International Travel: Economy class airfare via an IATA-accredited airline, limited to one round-trip ticket per academic year.
  • Living Allowance: A fixed sum for a duration of 12 months, extendable to 13 months at a reduced rate.
  • Registration Fees: Covered at the current rate for DGD scholars.
  • Insurance: Directly paid by ARES.
  • Visa Application Costs: Covered when exceeding 200 euros, subject to notification of actual costs.
