Nominations are open for the 2025 World Food Prize, the preeminent international award for food and agriculture. The award honors those advancing global development through transforming food systems.

The World Food Prize recognizes achievements across the full scope of the food system, including in economics and finance, natural resource conservation, nutrition, plant and animal science, rural development, food and agricultural technology and more. Nominations for women and those from the Global South are especially encouraged.

Other previous Laureates include the late scientist Dr. M.S. Swaminathan, former president of Ghana John Kufuor, current president of the African Development Bank Akinwumi Adesina, the WHO’s Special Envoy for COVID-19 Sir David Nabarro and former CEO of Heifer International Jo Luck.

Any academic institution, private or public organization, or governmental unit may submit a nomination for the World Food Prize. Nomination criteria, the selection procedure, a social media toolkit for promotion and other information can be found at www.worldfoodprize.org/nominate

Eligibility Criteria for the World Food Prize:

  • Candidates must demonstrate that their exceptionally significant achievement has notably enhanced the quantity, quality, and availability of food for a large segment of the population.
  • The impact of the nominee’s work should be measurable or quantifiable, specifically in terms of reducing poverty, hunger, suffering, or enhancing health, nutrition, quality of life, and well-being.
  • It must be clearly evident that the improvements in food security are a direct result of the nominee’s specific actions and activities; without their specific achievements, such change would not have occurred.
  • The prize is primarily intended for individuals. In exceptional circumstances, where additional persons have collaboratively made indispensable contributions, multiple individuals may be included in a nomination. However, each person’s critical contribution must be conclusively proven, showing that without their collective input, the achievement would not have been possible.
  • Academic institutions, private or public organizations, or government units are eligible to submit nominations for the World Food Prize. These entities may submit any number of nominations they find suitable.
  • All applications are to be treated as confidential, preserving the secrecy of the identities of nominees and the organizations nominating them.
  • Individuals may prepare nominations, but they must be endorsed and submitted by an academic institution, private or public organization, or a government unit. Self-nominations will not be accepted.
  • Nominees remain eligible for three years from the year of submission. Nominators are encouraged to provide updated information during this period. After the three-year term, a new application is required to maintain consideration for the nominee.
  • The Selection Committee reserves the right to extend the eligibility period for applications deemed worthy of further review.

World Food Prize Required Documents:

  • Candidate data, including the name (or names) of the applicant, the nominated organization, postal address, email, and phone number.

  • Explain in maximum 150 words why the nominee deserves the award.
  • A maximum two-page detailed description of the candidate’s accomplishment. Achievement must indicate a significant and sustained improvement in food quality, quantity, availability or accessibility.
  • Detail the impact of the nominee’s achievements in improving health and nutrition, improving quality of life, or reducing poverty, hunger, and malnutrition in a maximum of two pages.
    The statement should include the number of people affected, the geographic scope of the impact, and the additional impact on the well-being of those affected.
  • At least two letters of support from people familiar with the candidate’s work but not associated with the proposed organization.
  • Submit documents that support the application, such as news reports or newspaper articles that highlight the candidate’s accomplishments and the impact of their work.

HOW TO APPLY ?

  • Applicants must create an account on the official website.
  • After creating the account, applicants will be asked to fill out the nomination form.
  • Applicants must complete the application form before they will be allowed to submit their nomination.
  • In the first step of the application, the applicant will be required to add nominator information, including name, position, organization, phone number, email, and mailing address.
  • In step two, the applicant will be required to enter and provide nominee information, including Name, Current Position and Organization, Date of Birth, Country, and Synopsis (150 words or less).
  • At last, applicants will also be required to upload other supporting (required) documents.
  • Please note that all text documents must be submitted in Microsoft Word or PDF format (.doc, .docx, or .pdf).
  • If a nominee becomes a winner of the World Food Prize, the information in the nomination and supporting documents may be used to prepare press materials on the winner.
